Maternal and women's health

What this service is

Family planning means choosing whether, when and how to have children — and having the information and support to make those decisions well. It also includes advice on contraception, fertility awareness, sexual health and how family planning fits into your overall health.

Every person’s situation is different. The number of children you have, your health, your work, your partner’s wishes and what you can afford all matter. We will talk through the options without judgement and help you decide what is realistic for you.

No method suits everyone, and side effects and effectiveness vary from one method to another. We explain the options in plain language, and you can change your mind later. Your choice is yours.

Why people come to us

If any of these sound like you, please come in — or phone us first if you would like to talk it through before you do.

  • You want to start a contraceptive method, or change the one you are using.
  • You would like advice on spacing pregnancies.
  • You have stopped using a method and need cover.
  • You have questions or concerns about side effects, or about fertility and planning a pregnancy.

Before you come

  • Bring your clinic card or any records you have.
  • Bring a list of any medication and supplements you take.
  • Bring the results of any tests done elsewhere.
  • Write down your questions beforehand — it helps.

All of our conversations are private. You are welcome to ask questions at any point, and you can ask to speak alone.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

If your question is not answered here, phone us on 067 575 2528 — we are happy to talk it through.

Is my consultation confidential?

Yes. What you discuss is between you and the practitioner. We will involve anyone else only with your permission.

Will you pressure me into a decision?

No. We will explain your options and the practical considerations, and the decision is entirely yours to make and to change.

Can I change methods later?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Let us know if something is not working for you — it is far easier to adjust than to put up with a method you are unhappy with.

Do you have contraceptive stock available?

Stock changes from week to week. Please phone 067 575 2528 before you come in and we will tell you what is available on the day.
