Preventive Screening

What this service is

Cholesterol is a fatty substance your body needs, but when the balance of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood is wrong, it builds up inside the walls of your arteries. That process is one of the main causes of heart disease and stroke.

A cholesterol check is usually done from a blood sample. Because the result is influenced by what you have eaten and how active you have been, we may ask you to fast for the most accurate reading.

Cholesterol is one part of a wider picture. We look at it alongside blood pressure, blood glucose, weight and your family history, because your overall risk matters more than any single number.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

If your question is not answered here, phone us on 067 575 2528 — we are happy to talk it through.

Does eating affect the result?

Yes. Food in the hours before a test can raise triglycerides and lower the measured HDL, so a fasting test gives the clearest picture.

How long do I have to fast?

Usually nothing to eat or drink other than water for around 9 to 12 hours. Please confirm the instructions when you book your appointment.

Is a high result bad?

It is a risk factor that can be changed. One result does not define your risk — it is one part of a wider assessment.

Can I lower my cholesterol without medication?

Diet, weight, activity and stopping smoking all have a real effect. Some people also need medication, and we will talk that through if it applies to you.
